We're Going To Dubai

Recently, I came home from a day roof work.  I was not home for more than five minutes when my wife told me that she wanted to go to Dubai.  My wife is the type where she does not ask for much, but once she does and she has her mind set on it; it gets done.  I was not very familiar with Dubai.  I believe I knew about as much as most people, which was that everyone in the country is rich, there are exotic cars everywhere and it is home to the world’s tallest building.  A friend of mine had recently told me about Priority Pass and hanging out in the airport lounge before flights so I figured worst case scenario, I’d take this trip, hangout in the lounges and see some cool cars.  What I found was so much more.  In this post, I’ll share my experience in Dubai and the five must do activities and adventures that you should also experience.

Priority Pass and Dulles International Airport (IAD)

Air France Lounge at Dulles International Airport

There were a lot of layers on this trip that helped it to be one of our best trips ever and it began with us getting off to a great start.

We gout out of the house early and parked at a local hotel using Global Airport Parking.  This saves us a couple of dollars per day when we travel on parking our car at the airport.  The shuttle took us to the airport and dropped us off at the Emirates at IAD – Dulles International Airport.

Getting through security was a breeze and once we arrived to our gate and we understood the lay of the land, it was time to test out this Priority Pass and see if it was worth all of the hype.

We were in Terminal A and just across from our gate…maybe a 30 second walk, was the Air France Lounge.  So the crew and I gathered in front of the entrance and before I knew it, the doors were automatically opening and we were introduced to the life of luxury and finally able to see what lies behind those doors that I previously never knew existed.  I must say, I was blown away.  Buffet styled food…cereal…AUTOMATIC COFFEE MACHINE!!!  Oh…and a full bar with complimentary drinks.

The boys got their food and we got them situated…then Autumn and I got a little breakfast and coffee.  Then she said “Wil P…I think they have mimosas.”  I said “Say no more,” and I got us drinks from the bar and sure enough…no charge… or, included with the membership.  Of course, always tip your bartender.

After a couple of whiskeys (I get really nervous when I fly and this was about to be a 14 hour flight), I remember looking around at my three sons and my wife and in that moment thanking God for the life that we live.  I did not take my first plane ride until I was a teenager and here theses boys are chillin’ in the airport lounge and are able to enjoy multiple trips per year.  God is so good!

Well, this was a wonderful first Priority Pass experience in the Air France Lounge at Dulles International Airport.  If this was any indication as to how this trip would be, then the best was yet to come.  This is how every trip should begin!

Air Bus A-380

For this 14 hour flight, we were fortunate enough to ride the Air Bus A-380.  It is the plane with the upper deck.  Were were in the economy class near the front of the plane.  It gave us a little more leg space than in the back of the plane, which came in handy, even for short people like us.

The crew was fantastic.  They were attentive.  They have a program where if you have young children (our youngest at the time of this writing is seven), then they take a picture of you and your family and give the child either a duffle bag or a book bag.  We had three meals on this flight and their ICE entertainment system was just what the doctor ordered between naps.

To put the length of the trip into perspective, I was able to watch all there installments of Lord of the Rings and still have a lot of time in the air.  This was a long flight.  I had to be mindful to get up and stretch and walk around every couple of hours.  At first I felt strange doing it, but when I saw another passenger doing it, I felt more comfortable and I even convinced Autumn to walk around and stretch a bit.  My buddy Jermaine, who is lives in Amelia County, VA (shout out) suggested that I get some compression socks for the plane ride so Autumn and I both purchased a couple of pairs and I guess they helped out.  I have to keep reminding myself that I am getting older and I just can’t wing it when it comes to my body because it is changing and simple things like compression socks can help with circulation.  Jermaine said that these made him feel like he could dunk a basketball again, lol.  I’ve never dunked a basked ball, but if it made him feel like that, then I wanted that feeling too.

As scheduled, just around 8:30am local time, we were touching down at Dubai International Airport.  Thank God for a safe flight.  We were able to exit the plane from the front and because we were only 4 or 5 rows back, we were one of the first to get off.  Pretty cool!  Let the vacation begin…or continue.  Not sure where we are at this point.  🙂

Welcome to Dubai

The Beautiful Buildings of Dubai represented in
Lego Land Dubai.

After a 14 hour flight, we were finally in Dubai.  Time to see what the deal is with this place.  We got off of the plane and immediately went to the restroom.  I’m a big believer in use the restroom when you can because you do not know when the next opportunity will present itself.  Now that I got that out of the way, we had a 20 minute walk through the airport to get through customs and to the baggage claim.  It was HOT!!!  There were these huge windows that allowed the sun in and they acted like big magnifying glasses.

So, getting through customs took about 3 minutes.  No issues.  The distance between customs and  baggage claim was about the length of two football fields. So it begins… “Would you like a free tour of Dubai.  All you have to do is listen to a 45min presentation and we’ll pick you up from your hotel…it isn’t a timeshare.”  Now…in my experience, when people lead with “what it isn’t” then usually, it is what they are saying it isn’t. At any rate, I left the first guy and before I could turn around, there was another one.  Maybe 3 or 4 in total, but I had to just let them know, “I just got off of a 14 hour flight.  I hear you talking, but I’m not listening.”  We eventually made our way to our luggage and found the Emirates Vacation area (we booked the trip through Emirates Vacation).  Our assistant directed us to our transport form the airport to our hotel – Lego Land Hotel.

The drive from the airport to the hotel took about 45min and we were able to see a lot of the popular buildings along the way.  That was fun and exciting but I was really excited to reach our destination and just lay down in a bed for a few moments.

Legoland Resort - Dubai

Pulling up to the Legoland Hotel was really exciting.  The boys had no idea where we were going to stay so once they saw the legos, they started to get hype.  We arrived about 11:00 and just missed breakfast.  The representatives at the front desk were very polite and they wasted no time getting our room assigned to us, as they had already made preparations for our early checkin.  That said, Clark wasted no time checking out the indoor playground.

As I mentioned earlier, we booked our vacation through Emirates Vacations.  We choose to stay at the Legoland for a few reasons…  for starters, it’s Lego Land and who can resist Lego Land.  Also, it included breakfast, lunch and dinner; so to be in a foreign country (or anywhere away from home) for an extended period of time with three kids and not have to worry about food, that was a HUGE plus.  I’ll talk more about the food and the resort and the parks in another post, but that said, another reason for staying here is that we had full and unlimited access to all four of the theme parks on the property.  These included LegoLand Dubai, Lego Water Park, Bolly World – which is a theme park based on classic movies from India and Motion Gate, which is similar to Universal Studios, and has rides and attractions based off of popular American movies from Columbia Pictures, LionsGate and DreamWorks.  There was something for everyone from the youngest to the oldest.  We stuck together for most of the time but when Clark wanted to do something more on his age, then I would stick with him and when there was a roller coaster or something more for Ethan and William, then Mommy went with them.

The average temperature while we were here was about 90 degrees.  There was some really good strategic planning as a lot of the rides were indoors and the air conditioning was very welcomed and appreciated.  Prior to leaving the States, we did order a couple hand held USB Fans which came in extra handy for walking from the hotel to the various parks and for when we were not in air conditioned environments.

The lines for the rides were very short.  Most rides, we were able to walk right on and the ride attendants were waiting for us (or anyone) to show up.  The few times that there was a line, we never waited longer than seven minutes.

Camel Ride - Sand Bashing - Desert Buffet

Emirates Vacations, offered us an opportunity to book our excursions through them.  The benefit was that Emirates Vacation would make sure that the vendor who we were dealing with would take care of us.  The catch was that we had to book all of our excursions at one the same time, so we felt kinda of rushed when describing and booking times around our schedules but it worked out.  One of the excursions that we booked was a 3-in-One…  Camel Ride, Sand Bashing and a Desert Buffet.

Our driver picked us up on time (he was actually early) in a Lexus Land Cruiser (this will make sense later).  Our driver was also our tour guide.  We drove for about an hour and then pulled off on side of the road into a small hut/store that was in the middle of the desert.  This was our first destination.  We were the only people there which made me feel kind of uneasy.  The driver ushered us out of the car and into store and we were bombarded by aggressive salespeople putting desert scarves on our heads and putting colored desert sand in my kid’s hands and sell, sell, sell.  I wasn’t prepared for it and before I knew it, I had paid $250U.S. for five head scarves.  Then they found the traditional clothing that the men wear in my size.  I started to get my earrings about myself and negotiated this a little better.  They tried to hit me over the head for the sand and I was in character now and I was like “I am not going to pay $200 for some colored sand that my seven year old can make at the beach with sidewalk chalk and I not know the difference.”  I walked the tight rope and balanced contributing to their economy and individual pockets vs getting taken advantage of so I paid $60 for the bottled sand.  I still did not feel good about the $50 each for the head scarves, but it is what it is.

After about 15 minutes, more people and other groups began to arrive and it felt good to see others go through the same experience that I just went through.  Once we were done with the shopping, we were escorted outside and prepared for our camel ride.  There were three camels laying down that were linked together by a rope.  Ethan and William got on the first camel.  Autumn and Clark got on the second camel.  The third camel and I locked eyes and he let out a big groan, as if to say “You are not getting on me!”  I got on him, but he didn’t like it.  As he stood up, he released another groan and we started our walk.  The guide lead the first camel by rope while the second and third camel followed.  We walked for about seven minutes and stopped.  A kid drove up on a 4-Wheeler and took pictures.  Then we returned to our starting point.  Part of me was like, “we paid how much for what?!?”  Then I was like, “did you really want to be on longer?  That was enough.”

There was a gentleman holding a falcon to take pictures, but our guide explained to us that there would be a falcon holder at the dinner buffet and we could take pictures there at no charge, so we waited for that experience.  The sales person approached and wanted to sell me the print out of the pictures that were taken on the camels in the desert while we were out.  Again…balance supporting the local economy vs being taken advantage of.  We went from $150 US to $40 US for the five pictures.  I believe that was fare.  After the transaction, we got back into our ride.

We drove about five minutes and went on the side of the road again.  Here, the driver switched gears and we entered the sand dunes of the desert and our off road sand bashing adventure started.  I did not know what to expect.  I’d seen a few videos on the YouTube with the cars in the sand, but never really though much of it.  Well…after about 30 seconds, I learned really quick that this is pretty intense.  We saw cars on side of the sand that had stalled out or needed some maintenance.  All that I could think of was that this is not the place to breakdown because as far as the eye could see in every direction was sand, sand and more sand.  Flat sand.  Sand mountains.  “Hey, what’s that over there?”  “Sand!”  At any rate, this guy was really good.  Where was sand coming up over the car.  He’d to go the top of a sand mountain and we’d go down 10 and 12 pitch declines and the car would be just fine.  I see now why he picked us up in a Lexus Land Cruiser.  This was really intense and it just kept going on.  We were out there for about 30 or 45 minutes.  I was able to get some pretty good video footage.  We all really enjoyed it.  Once done, we parked and did some sand boarding (snow boarding, but on the sand) until the sun started to go down, then we made our way to the dusk buffet in the desert…about another 30 minute drive away.

The food was nothing to write home about…three or four different types of rice.  Something with sauce on it.  Some dried out pieces of chicken and some seasoned ground lamb.  That was pretty good, in fact it was the best thing on the menu.  I did not eat much because the bathroom was not the best and I did not want nature to start calling with me being two hours away from the hotel.  It worked out.

There were four shows.  A guy who turned in circles.  Literally…that’s all he did.  Turned in circles…spinning and spinning and spinning for about 10 minutes.  I just kept thinking to myself, “is this what they did for entertainment before they found oil out here?”  That said, as far as professional spinners go, this guy had to have been at the top of the list.  There was a second show…I forget what it was, but one of the boys will remind me later and I’ll update the post.  The third show was a belly dance.  After she finished, everyone was allowed to eat.  Following dinner, there was another show featuring a fire eater.  He was pretty good.  And the last show for the evening was another belly dancer.  Her top was a little too big and I believe she had a wardrobe malfunction in the very beginning of her show, which may have been a good thing because the had the attention of everyone in the audience from that point on.

After the show, we headed back to the hotel.  I gave the driver proper warning and let him know that if he hears strange sound then he should not worry and we are not being attacked by a bear, it’s just that I snore…loud…and it may not seem natural, but I promise that I and we will be all right.  He said that he understood.  about an hour later or two later, we pulled up to the hotel.  I was well rested…he was traumatized.  I gave him a great tip and we disembarked his automobile and headed straight to the hotel dining room with just enough time to get a proper dinner before they closed for the evening.  What a day!

At The Top: Burg Kalifa | Mall of Dubai | Water Show

Our tour to the Burg Kalifa did not come with transportation, so we took a taxi.  The hotel has taxi cabs that wait outside, so there was no trouble hailing one.  It took about 30 minutes to arrive to the Dubai Mall.  The cost was 123 Dirhams…about $35U.S

The most popular attraction in Dubai is probably the Burg Kalifa.  It is in the Guiness Book of World Records for being the tallest building in the world.  It is also known world wide for being the tallest building in the world and if you visit Dubai, then you’ve got to visit the Burg Kalifa.

The Burg Kalifa, is attached to or right next to the Mall of Dubai – which is the largest mall in the world.  Our Burg Kalifa tour was scheduled for 3pm.  Every evening, there is a water show just under the Burg Kalifa, that puts you in the mindset of the Water Show at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas, NV.  The plan was to arrive early enough to be able to tour the mall a bit.  Then do our tour.  Then hang out until the sun went down to see the water show at the Burg Kalifa.  It worked out perfect!

We toured the mall.  There was an Air Jordan store that had every pair of Jordan’s in gold.

We eventually made our way to the checkin for Burg Kalifa and picked up our ticket.  The representative told us that if we wanted to take our tickets now and start our tour, then we could.  We had about 2 hours to go before our tour started so we took her up on her offer.  It took 56 seconds to ascend to the 125th floor.  We were greeted by picture takers once we got off of the elevator.  We purchased the packet because who knows when we’ll return and the boys are getting older.

We had a great view of Dubai and once the city stopped, it was sand as far as the eye could see.  It was as if someone took the city and dropped it in the middle of the desert.

The New Museum in Dubai.

The Unexpected 3-Hour Tour

After we finished taking pictures and posing and taking more pictures, we made our way to the elevator and back down.  Back to the regular section off the mall and the food court where we could not resist the temptation to have lunch at McDonalds and get a McRoyal with Cheese.  By the time we finished eating it was time to go outside and claim our space on the fence to view the water show.

Once the show was over we headed back inside of the mall with plans to make our way to the taxi cab area and make our way back to the Lego Hotel.  As I was approaching the door, a fella said hello and introduced himself as a tour guide.  He offered to take us on a three hour tour of Dubai for 200 Dirhams and drop us off at our hotel.  Autumn and I discussed it for a few moments and if it just made sense.  We paid 123 Dirhams to get to get to the mall.  We’d probably pay about the same to return to the hotel.  For a few dollars more, we could get a tour.

We were not really interested in a tour; however, we still needed to visit the Gold Souk and Spice Souk for my mother and we would be leaving Dubai the next day, so once again, this “opportunity” was right on time.  He escorted us to his SUV, which was parked in the underground parking lot.  Once we got settled, he counted five people and said ok, “how would you like to pay?  5 people at 200 dirhams, that is 1,000 dirhams.  I said “Wait a minute Jack…you said “200!”  “Yes, Buddy…200 per person.  I told him that he could let us out right now because that’s deceiving and I don’t appreciate that one bit.  We went back and forth a few times and we agreed to $700 dirhams for the tour.  Once we discussed the bag and got the money out of the way, the tour began and I must say, he was awesome.

He started with giving us the history of Dubai and explaining that the country is the United Arab Emirates and it is made up of seven states.  Dubai is one of those seven states.  He continued with the history.  They used to be fishermen and their primary export was pearls.  Then other countries started to make fake pearls, and their industry dried up over night.  Then in the late 90’s/early 2000’s, oil found and life changed overnight.

He took us to the New Museum and we took pictures there.  We drove by the famous Picture Frame.  We visited the creek and old Dubai.  Eventually, we parked and got onto a boat which took us across the creek.  Here, we ventured into the Gold Souks, which is over 600 stores that all sell 18karet+ gold.  As far as the eye could see…gold!!!  PURE GOLD!!!  It was truly something to experience.  After we finished at the Gold Souk, we went to the Spice Souks and found some good quality Saffron, for my Mom.  After returning to the car, we continued our tour and visited the Burg Al Arab and drove to the Palm Jumeirah.  The Burg Al Arab was lit up beautifully and we were able to pull up right in front and take some beautiful pictures of it.  Unfortunately, for the Palm, it was dark and we could not really see it; however, we can still stay that we visited it.

As promised, he delivered us to our hotel and we arrived around 1am.  What a way to wind down for our vacation.

5 Must Do's In Dubai In 2022

My family and I recently returned from a dream vacation in Dubai, UAE.  We were sitting in the backyard enjoying a freakishly warm November day in here in Northern Virginia when we began to discuss the trip and what we did what we enjoyed and what we look forward to doing on our next visit.

We booked our vacation through Emirates Vacations and we were able to book most of our excursions through them as well.  As first time travelers with children to Dubai, having Emirates Vacations as an option for booking not only the vacation but also for our excursions gave us some sense of security in the vendors on site because the vendors have been vetted.  We could have booked all of our adventures through Emirates Vacations; however, we were not sure of how our schedule would break down once we touched down and we did not want to be financially locked into an event and not be able to attend.

Below are our Top Five Must Do activities in Dubai, based upon our recent experience.  You may have similar experiences.  You may have a totally different experience based upon your visit.  If you haven’t visited Dubai, yet; then feel free to use this information as inspiration and education for when you do visit.

Lego Land Hotel and Resort

First on our list is the Lego Land Hotel and Resort.  We actually stayed at Lego Land Hotel and our package included breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as unlimited visits to the four theme parks that make up the Lego Land Resort.  Those parks are Lego Land, Lego Water Park, Bollywood and Motion Gate.

Our primary reason for staying here revolves around our children.  We have three boys, each in different age groups.  At the time of this writing, our oldest is 14 our middle boy is 12 and our youngest is seven.  You could probably imagine that they are each interested in different activities.  All three of them went through a Lego phase.  The two older boys have been involved with Lego Robotics and Lego is a brand that is familiar to them.  The older two even visited Lego Land in California, USA.  So, the theme parks offered the boys excitement and entertainment at their respective levels.  Our seven year old was able to get on the rides and attractions that he wanted to get on.  Our 12 year old and 14 year old were able to ride roller coasters and do what they wanted to do.  And there were plenty of sit down family rides that we could do together as a family and everyone was happy and satisfied.

In addition to the familiarity of Lego and the various theme parks offering the boys various activities, we had our breakfast, lunch and dinner included at the Lego Hotel Restaurant.  This came in so handy.  I can not underestimate the value of being able to say “we’ll be back to the hotel in 30 minutes and can eat lunch/dinner as soon as we get back,” every time we passed a popcorn vendor or slushie vendor or some type of food vendor at one of the parks.

Camel Ride | Sand Bashing | Desert BBQ & Show

One of the excursions that we booked was the Camel Ride, Sand Bashing and Desert BBQ and Show.  On the surface, I knew what to expect with this adventure because their names are self evident; however, I was not sure what the actual experience would be like.  Boy was I in for a surprise.

We started the morning off with an early breakfast and made our way to the one of the Lego Land for an Eric Cartman experience.  This is a reference for the cartoon SouthPark, where one of the characters – Eric Cartman, showed up to the amusement park shortly before closing and attempted to get on every ride in the park before closing.  The goal was to eat early, have some fun, grab an early lunch and prepare for our trip and everything worked out according to plan.

Our driver contacted me on What’sApp and confirmed that he’ll pick us up for 2pm and he was actually 10 minutes early.  Off to the desert we go!

After driving for about an hour, we pulled over to the side of the road to what looked like a shack in the middle of…well… in the middle of the desert.  There were a few people there and we were mobbed by sales people who put the Kafiya/Keffiyeh on our heads and bottles of sand in the kid’s hands…it was over whelming.  The one thing that I did want for myself was one of the coofandy…the white garments that the men wear and just my luck, they had one that fit me perfectly.  So, after the shopping, it was time to ride the camels.  By this time, many more people had arrived and it looked more like a bazzar or swap meet than it did of the shady ghost town 20 minutes earlier and we all felt more comfortable.

The camel guide led us to the other side of the gate where the three camels were as well as people in the distance riding on All Terrain Vehicles (ATV’s) and there was also a gentleman with a falcon on his arm for people to pose and take pictures with for a nominal fee, of course.  Our guide informed us that we have the falcon pictures included with our trip, but it is not until later at the buffet and that reduced the pressure of the “once in a lifetime opportunity” to take a picture with the falcon.  We approached the camels and I must say, I got nervous for a quick second, concerned as to whether or not the camel could support my weight.  Two of the camels had muzzels over their mouths.  For the one that did not, I instructed the boys and my wife to not look the camel directly in the eyes on the account that they may spit at you.  Now…I’m not sure if that is true or not, but I have seen enough instances at the National Zoo in Washington DC where the camels were able to spit on folks with pretty good range.  At any rate, the two older boys mounted the first camel, and he stood up with no issues.  My wife boarded the second camel with my our youngest son, and that camel stood without any problems.  As I approached my camel he and I made contact.  The camel let out a loud groan as if to say “You’re kidding, right!?!  There’s no way that you are getting on my hump!”  I groaned back at the camera as if to reply, “Yep…this is happening…it’s already paid for.  Maybe they’ll give you workman’s comp.”  With that, I swung my leg across his saddle and held on tight as he stood up and let out another loud barrowing groan.  I believe this groan was directed towards the camel guide as if to say to him, “I’ll get you for this!”

The camel ride lasted about 10 – 15minutes.  We walked about 400 meters and then we stopped as a kid on an ATV drove up right now time with a camera and he took pictures of us.  Once he was done, then we walked back to where our camel trip began and we got off of the camels and took family pictures with them.  We exited back to the other side of the gate and as we were ushered back to our Lexus Land Cruiser, I was approached by the final vendor with the pictures that they took of us on while on the camels with an offer to purchase them.  We quickly negotiated the price and we received five beautiful 8″x10″ pictures for about $35 bucks.

Now that I had the pictures from the camel ride, I joined the rest of the family inside of the Land Cruiser and we left the “property,” and drove for maybe five to 10 minutes and drove up to a gate once again in the middle of the desert.  We waited for a few moments and a couple of other Land Cruisers pulled up next to us and behind us.  The drivers got out and spoke for a moment, then one of them opened the gate.  Our driver returned to the Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) and said “Now we do sand bashing!”  And with that, he increased the speed and we started to slip and slide and go up and go down and I promise, he did everything in his power to try and break the car but it held up.  My youngest does not like going up and down on hills…well, lets just say that we went up and down so many hills and he cried so much to the point that he overcame his fears!!!  It was a lot of fun.  I tried to play it cool, although I was holding on for dear life.  After about 30 minutes, we met the rest of the Land Cruisers in our party…about 15 in total and everyone was able to get out and take pictures of the sand and the sand dunes and ride the snowboard/sand board down one of the hills.  The drivers used this time to service their cars as needed.  While here, we experienced a beautiful sunset as the sun went down over the horizon.  Everyone re-entered their respective SUV’s and we drove about 30 minutes to another remote section of the desert where we were treated to a night of traditional native entertainment and a BBQ in the desert.

The BBQ was quite the experience.  There were different types of vendors around the perimeter.  Souviners, jewelry, hand painting, soft drinks.  Towards the back were two set ups of food.  This is where the lines would eventually be for the folks to get their food.  The area was about the size of an American football field…roughly 100 yards.  In the middle was a stage.  And surrounding the stage were a tables, each surrounded by four to six bean bag style chairs.

The entertainment began with two shows…  a man who spun in circles for 10 minutes balancing baskets and a belly dancer who danced to traditional Arabic music.  They called him the Tanura Dancer or Local Bedouin Dancer.  He started with two and went up to six.  The belly dancer…well, she danced.  After they did their thing, then everyone rushed to the two lines and got their fill of three different types of rice, a couple of sauces to put on top of the rice, authentic flat bread that was made on the inside of the clay pot topped off with dried out chicken and a ground lamb molded into the shape of a small hot dog that actually tasted pretty good.  I kept it light because I knew that we were at least an hour away from the hotel and I did not know if and/or when I would have to go to the restroom.  I figured worst case scenario, we would return to the hotel just before the dinner buffet closed at 10:30pm and I could get something there or order room service if I or Autumn or the boys were still still hungry.

After the dinner, another performer took to the stage.  This was a fire show where the gentleman danced with fire and twirled fire and even spitting fire and extinguishing fire in his mouth.  It was pretty cool until I noticed that my seven year old was looking at the performance as if he was taking notes so that he could attempt to tame the fire once he returned home.  Once Fire Man concluded, then we were treated to a second belly dancer.  This dancer had a slight wardrobe malfunction in the very begging of her show, which garnered her the undivided attention of half of the audience.  She had a ton of energy and she was slightly hypnotic as made eye contact with various members of the audience and made them believe that she was communicating to them through her eyes.  Additionally, she was able to get crowd participation and involvement with her show.  She was really good.

Once the final performance was over, we made our way to our car and started our way back to the hotel.  All I can remember is closing my eyes once I got in the car and like magic, once I opened them again we were pulling up to the hotel.  We were able to grab a late dinner and head to the room once we were done.

At the Top: Burg Kalifa, The Dubai Mall and The Water Show

Next on the list of Five Must Do’s in Dubai, is to visit the Dubai Mall and go to the 124th/125th floors, which are the observation decks of the Burge Kalifa.  This can very easily turn into an all day event because the mall is the largest malls in the world and it is very easy to get caught up looking at all of the stores.

Our paid excursion were the tickets to 125th and 124th floors of the Burg Kalifa.  We had to provide our own transportation and so after breakfast, we took a taxi cab that was staged just outside of the Lego Land Hotel, to the Mall of Dubai.  Surprisingly enough, the taxi only came out to 123 Dirhams (the currency in Dubai) which is equal to about or just under $34 U.S. Dollars when you do the currency exchange Dirhams to Dollars.  The driver dropped us off at one an enterance near a department store then were and told us where to go to pick up a taxi on the way back.

We entered the mall through a department store and there were name brands from wall to wall.  Our driver told us that in order to find the Burge Kalifa, then we should “…go straight through the store and make a right at the water wall and down the escalator.”  We were about four hours early; however, we wanted to lay eyes on the destination so that we would not get lost and miss our time slotted appointment.

We made our way through the department store and into the actual mall and I immediately started to see brands that I know and are familiar with.  The most impressive was the Air Jordan store which hosted in the front window a display of every pair of Air Jordan’s sneakers made in either gold or white.  I had to take a look inside.  After the Jordan store, we were surprised to see an ice skating rank.  It looks like people would skate in 15 minute intervals.  We watched that for a few moments before moving on.  We found the water wall and I took a few pictures of it.  Then we turned right and went down the escalator.  By now, we started to see signs that read “At the Top:  Burg Kalifa,” and we used these to reinforce our spoken direction.

Two Days In New York

Surprise Road Trip

A few days ago, Autumn and I surprised the boys with a road trip to New York.

William (middle boy) just completed sixth grade.  Sixth grade is the grade that students learn about the American Revolution and the Declaration of Independence and our Founding Fathers.  One of which is Alexander Hamilton.

A few years ago, Lin-Manuel Miranda, created a play about American Founding Father, Alexander Hamilton, and the play had recently been streamed to Disney+.

William’s strategy to avoid reading about this period in American History was to watch the play Hamilton on Disney+, over and over and over again.  And once that got old, he would play the sound track over and over and over again on Alexa.  This would happen almost every day for about six or seven months.

Needless to say, the lyrics to the sound track would play over and over and over again in my head and eventually, I started to actually think about how relevant the story of Hamilton is now just as much as it was back then.

Autumn saw ticket for Hamilton at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC…not to far from the house (compared to New York), but tickets started at $500.  Then for “poops and giggles” she check ticket prices in New York on Broadway.  Under $200 each.  That’s when she she called me to ask if I wanted to do this.  Now…that is a little tongue and cheek.  She already knew what she wanted to do but she just wanted my participation.  She was not really asking me, she was…  letting me know that we would be going to New York to see the play, Hamilton, so…

A few days ago, Autumn and I surprised the boys with a road trip to New York.  The goal was to get on the road by 10:00 (just after DC rush hour traffic ended) and arrive at the hotel in Manhattan about 3pm…just before New York afternoon rush hour begins.  Perfect plan, except that we had gone to a Ziggy Marley concert at Wolf Trap with some friends the night before and after a 15 year old bottle of scotch and lots of smoke in the air, I didn’t wake up until after 11 and we did not get on the road until 3:30pm…just as afternoon rush hour was starting.

One State Per Hour

All things considered, we made pretty good timing.  We would enter a new state each hour.  By 4:30, we were entering Maryland.  By 5:30, we were entering Delaware.  We hung out at the Joe Biden Welcome Center (rest stop) to take a breather and gas up before heading into New Jersey to avoid the full service gas stations (not that there is anything wrong with that…we recognize that people make a living doing that, we just are not used to it).

Pan-Handlers in Delaware

***Quick note...it takes about 15 - 20 minutes to travel through Delaware. Leaving Maryland and entering New Jersey. Is you should stop at the gas station or rest area in Delaware, the "scam" that the pan handlers like to run is "Excuse me Sir/Ma'am...I just ran out of gas and I need a few dollars to put gas in my car...can you spare a few dollars for gas?" On our way to New York, it was a middle aged/older white lady and she was hitting everyone up (including me). We parked at the rear of the parking lot to walk our puppy - Goldie the Golden Doodle (check him out at www.GoldieTheGoldenDoodle.com) and we took turns walking to the rest area to use the restroom. First I walked with Clark and Ethan. On our way out, the lady asked me for money. Once I returned to the car, I took over for walking Goldie and Autumn and William went to the restroom. Once Goldie was done, we got into the car and moved the car to the front of the parking lot to pick up Autumn and William. As I was parking, the same lady was waiting at my window to ask for "gas money" once again. I told her, "you already asked me." She said, "Opps...sorry. Enjoy your trip." We both laughed. She did have an middle aged man who was running her scam with her. He would check in with her at the rest center and then make his way over to the gas station to pan handle and ask for money.

On the way home, we stopped at the same rest stop and gas station. On the gas station side, there was a mini van parked in the gas line at the pump and would not move. Three men, a woman and two children. Either Latino or European... same pitch line... "We have run out of gas and need gas money. Do you have a few dollars that you can give us for gas? I said "I am putting gas in my car now and we are trying to get home from New York." She said "We are trying to get to New York." I told her that "you're gonna need more than a few dollars to get to New York."

The point is...be mindful of the pan handlers.***

New Jersey Turn Pike

6:30, we enter New Jersey and get on the New Jersey Turn Pike.  The boys are still trying to guess where we are going, but they have a pretty good idea that we are heading to New York.  About 7:30…7:45, we begin to see the airplanes taking off and landing on our left side from Newark Airport t and  shortly after, on the right side we start to see the New York skyline and the mobile phone cameras start to come out and everyone is excited.

I continue to drive and after making a few wrong turns, I make my way past the Meadowlands where the New York Giants and Jets play and into the Lincoln Tunnel…WELCOME TO NEW YORK!!!

We Made It To New York

We arrive to our hotel…Element by Western…part of the Marriot family.  Next to the Port Authority.  Walking distance from Time Square.

We check into the hotel.  Park the car across the street.  Go to our room.  And head out to experience the city.

Street Food in Times Square

We hit the street around 10:30pm and the aroma of cannibas is strong in the air…fresh in my mind from the Ziggy Marley concert the night before.

Clark gets a street pretzel and William has a street chili cheese dog.  Ethan, Autumn and I hold out to see what our options are and we eventually settle on 5-Guys (a local favorite here in Virginia…also started here in Virginia).

Lots and lots and lots of people wearing Red Vests promoting New York City Bus Tours and lots of people promoting Comedy ShowsPalmer Family Travels – Clark hanging out with GoldMan in Times Square, New York.

The smell of Kabob Street Food smelled sooo good.  I had recently purchased a Kamodo Joe Jr (ceramic grill) and I had been making a lot of kabob’s recently and the smell of the grilled chicken on the New York Streets was so familiar.  I fight the temptation to get it and hold out for later.

We start to go towards the hotel and stop by a 5-Guys Burger Restaurant and pick up Double Patty Bacon Cheeseburgers and fresh cut potato fries for Autumn, Ethan and myself.

Mr. Gold

In front of one of the stores was a “Mime”… a guy dressed in all gold.  He was even painted gold and for $5.00, you could pose with him and interact with him and take a picture with him and that is exactly what Clark did.  Initially we were like “$5.00 for what?!?”  But after a moment we realized that this may end up being a once in a lifetime experience and a memory that will last for a lifetime… “Dancing with the Gold Man in New York’s Time Square.”

After we complete our tour of Times Square and pick up our food, we make our way back to the room, ate our burgers and fries and called it a night.

Morning Routine

The next day, I woke up around 7am and headed downstairs to the eating area and grabbed a cup of coffee and sat in the common area while reading along with my audio book (Traffic Secrets by Russel Brunson).

Around 8am, I returned to the room to assist everyone with waking up and eating breakfast and getting started  with our busy day.

Subway and Staten Island Ferry

First stop for the day, we made our way to the 42nd Street and Port Authority Subway and took Yellow W all the way to the end and we were on the 1pm Staton Island Ferry to sail past the Statue of Liberty.

There are paid and free options here.  When you return above ground from the subway, you’ll see people in blue vest with the Statue of Liberty on it.  These good people are workers for the paid tours of the Statue of Liberty.

If you go into the building with the huge letters that read “Staton Island Ferry” and go all the way up the stairs, then you will see the line for the free ferry.  This does not go to Ellis Island and it does not go to the Statue of Liberty; however, you do get beautiful views of the Statue of Liberty.

Once we returned, we went to the pizza shop/bar on the bottom level and had our first slices of New York Pizza!  So good!

Hey Jessie!

After leaving the ferry, we were back on the metro with a goal of visiting the house for “Hey Jessie” (the tv show from Disney) which is located in Central Park.

We navigated our way through the metro and walked to the house and took some pictures.  From there, we found a small playground and William and Clark played around a bit while Autumn and Ethan rested.

Once rested up, we got back on the metro and worked our way back to where we started… 42nd and Port Authority.

The boys wanted Wendy’s.  We were pressed for time so we did not argue about them getting Wendy’s – which is something that they can have back home versus experiencing authentic New York food.

Got them back to the room and Autumn and I ordered Dim Sum from Kung Fu Chinese Food, around the corner from the hotel.

We picked up our Dim Sum and brought it back to the room and shared a moment.  It was so yummy.

Hamilton

Dinner/Snack was over and we cleaned up.  Now it was time to make our way to Broadway.  The 15 minute walk ended when we passed the Hamilton store and William asked if we could go in.  Then he looked ahead and asked if the building on the other side of the street with the Hamilton sign on it is where they show the play.

That is where Autumn said “William, we saw the Statute of Liberty because that is where Clark wanted to go.  We saw Times Square because that is where Ethan wanted to go.  We never asked you where you wanted to go because we are surprising you with tickets to see the play, Hamilton.”

He was so excited.  We made our way to the building and he was in awe and disbelief for the next three hours.

After the Play

After the play, we walked around Times Square and took in the New York night life.

We ended up at a deli/bakery where we were able to get cookies and carrot cake and blackberry pie and New York Cheese Cake.

We also went to a pizza joint and ordered a large pizza to take back to the room.  Something about New York Pizza…it is just amazing!

Once back to the room, we ate the pizza and deserts and after an adventure filled day that included a lot of walking, everyone was ready for bed.

Wrapping Up...Until Next Time

The next morning presented itself with the same routine as the previous morning.

I got my coffee and continued with my audio book.

Then we had breakfast and started our preparations to leave the hotel and get back on the road and head home.

Before checking out, William and I were able to interview the Operations Manager of the hotel – Sean Ismael.  It was busy so we did not take up much of his time and we were very thankful for his time.

From there, I retrieved the car from valet/parking lot across the street and we got on the road to head home.

We arrived home about 8pm.  We had such a wonderful time in New York.  It is such a beautiful city.  Rich in history and culture and we are so thankful that it is so close.

The boys had an amazing time.  And it helps Autumn and I to feel fulfilled knowing that we are giving our children an opportunity to be exposed to some of the best that life has to offer.

We plan to make New York a place where we can visit every 90 days and pick a new area to explore each time.

Have you ever been to New York?  If so, where are some places that you enjoy visiting and eating at?

If you have never visited New York, would you like to visit?  Where in New York where you would like visit?

Do you want to share your vacations with the world?

A great way to do so is by building a website.

It is a lot easier to build a website today than it was ten years ago.

It does not require much.  To start, you need a domain name.  I like to use Go Daddy.  You can purchase a domain from Go Daddy here.

After your domain, you need hosting.  I like to use Host Gator for my hosting.  Host Gator is easy to use and they have an amazing support staff that helps a ton.  Click here to check out Host Gator.
